Popular races are having a huge growth during the last years. It is an activity in which people run a certain distance. They are called popular because in some of them there are professional and semi-professional athletes. Most of these athletes run for surpassing themselves, improving their marks, running with their teams, doing exercise or even for just finishing the race.
Some of these races have been for decades, others stand out because of their huge amount of participants or because they are attached to a specific city. And every year there are more and more races. In Spain, on the one hand, the San Silvestre Vallecana is one of the most important or outstanding races for the amount of participants and for its date: 31st December. On the other hand the marathon “La Reina” (42.195km), which recalls the Greek Filipides' heroic deed.
Nowadays, cities like New York, Boston or Berlin are pioneer in celebrating this kind of races. They usually plan the races so the athletes run around the most emblematic places of the city. In this way, races are also a way of promoting the city.
Santa Cruz is a cosmopolitan city and it has a coast itinerary with almost none slopes. This gives the opportunity to get good marks for advanced athletes. And it is also a very good race for those who are starting. This is why Santa Cruz de Tenerife has a good disposition for having one of the best itineraries for the Marathon in Spain.
